Mountain Cafe (Hiroshima)

Italian Cafe Ruzzo  When my daughter visited from Los Angeles, we spent several pleasant days  driving in the mountains, enjoying the scenery and stopping for lunch or coffee. We discovered a new favorite, Ruzzo, an Italian restaurant in Saki-cho. I definitely recommend this place with its nama pasta,( homemade pasta). I had the Ika-no-sumi pasta. (Squid and ink!) It is salty and garlicky and just delicious!! This cafe is number one in my ranking right now!!

I ordered it with the luncheon set and had salad, garlic bread, coffee and dessert. I ordered cappucino and it came with the face of popular anime character, “Anpan Man” floating on top! Be careful! It’s not open on Thursdays! Here is the location:

After the dessert, we continued driving to Yoshiwa. It is another 30 minutes or so. We saw many log house cafes and  restaurants along the way. Yukie was particularly interested in one that said “Ashi Yu Cafe” ( foot bath Cafe!) We need to check that one out some day! Finally we stopped at Mint House for coffee.

We enjoyed seeing all the seasonal arrangements of dry flowers the owner creates! You can take a lesson and make one there for about 2500 yen! This month’s featured arrangement was a long triangular harvest-themed piece.

The materials retain wonderful color because this cafe is located on the top of the hill she dries them in the chilly breeze! The menu here is pasta, curry with her own home-grown herbs as well as coffees, herb teas and desserts. Here is the address:

Many of you may know of the Jazz Cafe La Cazuela, in Yuki-cho, Saeki-ku. This is a great place to sit over coffee and dream while listening to soft jazz. We enjoyed the Oboro-Doufu lunch set for 1000 yen! Just hit the spot! The owner is very friendly and made us feel so at home!

La Cazuela often hosts live concerts with well-known musicians. Check their site for dates! http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~cazuela/
The final spot is also in Yoshiwa. We had lunch at Hill Valley Cafe.

Looking at the menu, we didn’t have high expectations, but the Roast Chicken sounded better than Hamburg lunch, so we ordered that! Good choice! It was really great.

Grilled to perfection with natural juices seasoned just right. Yukie thought the portions are just the right size. It came with a big round buttery bun, salad, dessert and coffee for just 1350 yen! I was so disappointed that they were sold out of the Berry Tart, but the Gateau d Chocolat was very good. I would love to go again!
I think I put on a few pounds during Yukie’s visit but it was lots of fun and the food was sooo good! I hope some of you can visit these cafes soon!  I plan to go back to Ruzzo very soon!
