Rainy Day Drive

My very dear friend Sumiko is visiting me from Fukuyama City for 3 days. Today it was rainy, but we had a very perfect day anyway. We spent the morning altering a pair of pajamas and a pair of pants for Mayumi. We also read the Bible and sang a hymn together. (or she sang and I lip synced it!) Then we decided to drive out to Saiki-cho in the country to take the clothes to Mayumi.

We were able to get permission to take Mayumi out to the recycle shop and for a late lunch in the town. Mayumi tried on the PJs and asked me to take pictures with her roommates. Then we took off for Heart Market Recycle Store. Sumiko bought Mayumi a sweater and a handbag. Mayumi loves Pink, so it was a pink handbag with a big ribbon clasp!

We drove around the country town  looking for a place to eat, but it seemed many places were out of business or closed on Thursdays. We finally agreed that we all felt like having okonomiyaki, the  pizza-like pancake which Hiroshima is famous for. Mayumi told us about a shop called Saiki down the  road but we had to stop and ask directions as it was set back from the road and hard to spot.

It was 2:00 when we sat down at the stools in front of the huge teppan (grill) and ordered okonomiyaki with noodles, meat and egg. The two women behind the grill resembled each other and Sumiko asked, “Are you sisters?” They are!

Mayumi eats hers more sedately, off a plate!

I was very hungry and literally drooling when the food was served to us! We dug right in. Sumiko ate hers right off the grill as any good Hiroshima denizen should!

Itsuko and Shizuko have been making okonomiyaki at this location for 30 years! We enjoyed our meal and meeting them too! It was the best way to spend a rainy afternoon, with good friends and good food! We enjoyed the drive and saw this interesting piece of roadside art on the way!

If you ever visit Hiroshima, you’ll want to be sure and try the Hiroshima okonomiyaki, right from the grill if you are up for it! It’s a delicious treat and very reasonable!

Thanks again to the Saeki sisters! We really enjoyed meeting you!

Last of all, let me show you the sewing project Sumiko and I did together while she stayed with me. It is a cloth and faux fur muffler that is anchored with a loop and stays neatly and warmly around your neck. We made matching ones! And we made two for Hiroo out of his late mother’s wool haori. This is very easy to make in an hour or two! Amazingly comfortable…if you start using it, you can’t live without it all winter!

Last of all, listen to two senior ladies singing a Japanese folk song..and forgetting a lot of the words!

Come again soon, Itoh Mama! Whatever we do together is fun!
