Miracle Baby

Baby Miwa (4 mo.)

Baby Miwa (4 mo.)

Last week I visited a former English student and friend in Kabe, Hiroshima. I went to see her newborn baby. Actually the baby was due on November 10th, a month before Kazue’s 37th birthday. However, threatening miscarriage, she was admitted to the hospital and on bedrest from September. In spite of all precautions, she began to hemorrhage and was taken by ambulance to the Prefectural hospital.

Tiny Miwa was born on September 20th, weighing only 1644 grams!( 3 lbs. 8 oz)  She was put in an incubator. Kazue wasn’t even allowed to hold her baby. Usually, the new parents are proud and excited, but Kazue must have been very worried whether the baby would have any problems, whether should would survive… being born so prematurely.

In humans the usual definition of preterm birth is birth before a gestational age of 37 complete weeks.[3] In the normal human fetus, several organ systems mature between 34 and 37 weeks, and the fetus reaches adequate maturity by the end of this period. One of the main organs greatly affected by premature birth is the lungs. The lungs are one of the last organs to mature in the womb; because of this, many premature babies spend the first days/weeks of their life on a ventilator.

Not allowed to stay at the hospital or even use the parking area, Kazue had to travel back and forth by train and bus to be by her baby’s side throughout the month-long vigil. Finally, she was allowed to hold her baby!

Miwa miraculously has no internal problems and was able to come home after 28 day! At four months, Miwa is already 4500 grams and takes only breast milk! Good for you Kazue!!

For Sanmi Mama, my good friend, this is her first Grandchild! I was thrilled to visit the home where Sanmi Mama was born (in this very house!!) and to hold baby Miwa in my arms! Kazue and Hideki are very proud new parents!

I get to hold a wide-awake Miwa-chan!

Who’s this weird foreign lady?!

I know Miwa will grow up to be a beautiful and bright girl! Congratulations!

How wonderful that she is doing so well! Having had a grandchild who was a preemie (though bigger than this little one), and remembering the anxiety surrounding that, I can imagine the fears of parents and grandparents! How those fears turn to joy when you can finally bring them home!
