Wood Factory and Cafe

Space Anthology

We braved the cold to drive to Takehara, veering off the main road for  a drive in the mountains. We were headed for a cafe known as Space Anthology! It is housed  in an old Japanese farm house, and the adjoining building is a showroom for wooden furniture designed by the owner, Midori Nyudo.

We easily found it and ordered the Pizza lunch even though it was only 11:00 Am! It was interesting that we go to the counter and pay before they serve us! The menu features 5 varieties of pizza, including “Today’s Surprise” pizza! It comes with salad, coffee and dessert. Kanae and I ordered 2 kinds ( cream cheese and walnut pizza, Apple-smoked Bacon Pizza) and shared.

The food was good and the atmosphere was very peaceful. We could view the snow-covered little garden through the window. The kitchen staff of 4, includes one professional patisserie who prepared an amazing Gateau du Chocolat! I ate it so quickly, I forgot to take a photo!

We were interested in some of the walls and shoji doors which were covered with wallpaper and collage. The cut-outs at the top of this frame are all trees and then a group of deer!

Some of the furniture was very unique like this little chair. The shop sells pottery, craft items and many charming accessories. It is fun to browse around. The cafe and shop are closed on wednesday and Thursday. They only serve lunch or cakes and coffee. Open form 10:00 to 3:30 on weekdays  and from 11:00 to 4:30 on Saturdays and holidays.  (Tel. 0846-29-2525)  It is located in Takehara, Nika-cho 2783 ( just past the Nika Dam. )

Remote location!

Remote location!

When I asked about her family, the owner told me they had one ten-year-old son. I asked how he felt about being moved to this remote area. She told me he fell in love with the school. Nika Elementary School has a student body of just 14!So we decided to visit there and she offered to call ahead and let them know. To be continued…
