Spring Comes to the Farm

All winter, we had no visitors. I felt lonely and sluggish. This week the weather warmed up considerably and it seems we suddenly had company! Mie came all the way out here to see me on Thursday! We enjoyed walking on the beach and talking and having bamboo shoots for dinner. And I made an Easy Apple Cake!

A nice big one!!

A nice big one!!

Mie came up to the field and Hiroo gave us some fresh lettuce, trevise and mitsuba. Then she tried her hand at picking mushrooms!

On Friday I got to see Tae -san and Fumiko Miyahara! I haven’t seen them in ages so we enjoyed chatting over herb tea. Then on Saturday, 6 people showed up for English Bible Cafe! After our lesson, several of us went up to see Hiroo’s garden. I was happy to meet Kazuya and Misako for the first time!

Misako loves cooking and growing herbs so we made a promise to bake a rhubarb dessert soon! We usually pick rhubarb twice a year. in winter and in June! Hiroo makes a kind of rhubarb sauce which he calls “jam.”

But for the time being my next job is to oil stain the logs and also the deck before the onset of the rainy season! This coming week is called “Golden Week” in Japan as everyone has about 5 days off! I’ll be painting the porch! How will you be spending the week?

How many ways are there to eat Bamboo shoots? (Hiroo eats stir-fry!)

If you want to make a quick snack cake that can be served while it’s still warm, try this Easy Apple Cake made with salad oil instead of butter!

Hiroo-san makes an appearance! Is he shy about photos? My husband avoids them at all costs.

Men seem to avoid photographs! He doesn’t read my blog so he doesn’t know he is up there!
