Old Dolls on Display

Every year from the day of Doll Festival until mid-April, many shops and homes in Miyajima display their family collection of Hina dolls, some from the Meiji or Taisho period.  Today Mayumi and I visited Miyajima to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom! After getting off the ferry, we walked straight ahead and through a tunnel taking us away form the touristy area with all the souvenir shops. She wanted to go to the Miyazato gallery. It was good to see Ms Miyazato again. There were many dolls on display at this gallery cafe.

On the way, we found a new shop which opened last year, dealing in handmade glass accessories. The owners welcomed us in to see their dolls.

The Fizz Glass shop is located on the “Machiya doori” street which runs parallel to the main shopping street on Miyajima island. It is quieter and there are several nice shops there. I recommend you explore this backstreet on the island. If you follow it all the way to the end it leads to the back steps of the five-tiered pagoda!

Mayumi was excited to try out her English so she told every foreign-looking guy, ” I love you! How are  you?” Ha Ha! These young men from France didn’t mind and were kind enough to let us take a picture together. We talked to people form India and China too!

Finally we went through the Itsukushima Shrine, one of the ancient architectural treasures of Japan. Here Mayumi poses with the torii gate in the background.

The cherry trees were truly magnificent today! This is a great place to view the fluffy pink blossoms!

Fried oysters as a snack!

Mayumi says the chiffon cake at Miyazato cafe gallery is scrumptious! We did a real “tabe-aruki” thing eating our way  from one shop to another and finishing with fried oysters! We had a great and satisfying day!  (And the sun actually came out in the morning!) Thank you, God!
